Agree with all the sentiments here. Local shops like MC are the way to go for anglers of all levels. My local shop is an Orvis shop so my ability to touch non-Orvis brands is limited; I enjoy the chance to get to a place where I have options to consider and some discussion about pros & cons.

I'm a big fan of Orvis, if you only have one option that's not a bad one to have.

Yeah it could be worse for sure. The guys there are generally very helpful and know the area. I know several through local TU chapter. But with lines specifically, I feel the absence of options. For whatever reason, I prefer Rio. I won’t get that there. Similarly, my options for boots/waders is Orvis only. Good gear, but I like choices.

There is good reason to like Rio, I'm with you there. They are very innovative with their lines. The Creek line is my favorite example. And boots are an excellent example of why options are good. If you are wade fishing, especially in the mountain streams your boots better be working for you. Like fly rods, I'd hate to try and get them by mail. When I worked for L.L. Bean, I worked in the shoe department. I learned how important fit is to both comfort and performance. Your feet carry the load, and man when the fit is wrong it's miserable.

Tom, I love Mossy Creek fly fishing. The shop is complete for anything the fly fisher could want and the guide staff to include you is top shelf. Buying a rod online, especially for the new to intermediate angler is often a mistake...unless you order it from your local fly shop.

You are so right. The crew at Mossy Creek are outstanding, it a honor to be in their company. There are many good things about online shopping, but it can't beat the information from one-on-one with pros.
