Fishing in the shoulder season between winter and spring can be frustrating. You know what lies ahead, but it hasn’t arrived quite yet. You go fish anyway and hope it will be better than expected. Here’s something to up the chances of making it pay off.
Last week I shared Mossy Creek Fly Fishing’s article about Winter Tactics. This week you have the chance to see it in action. Check out “Fly Fishing Untangled Episode 1: How to Fish Nymphs in the Winter.”
Astute readers will recognize where Brian was fishing1. As you can see, even if it’s not the best of conditions, it’s still a good chance to explore or refine tactics and techniques.
There were a couple of points that Brian made at the end that are worth highlighting.
Sunlight is your friend; it warms the rocks and water. That means the bugs and fish may be more active. Take advantage of it. Fish in the afternoon when the temps are at their peak. Think about the where you are going to fish and when the sun is going to be warming the water.
Before heading out, look carefully at the weather report for the day. Know what the chance of precipitation is, the expected cloud cover and predicted temperatures. They all will impact the fishing, so plan your day accordingly.
