Friday fishing foto - small stream tactics
Lots of solid info on how to successfully fish brook trout water
It’s been a busy week with back to back board meetings at the Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources and having to figure out my March Madness bracket, it took until this morning to pull this together.1
Anyway here’s this week’s offering.
Regular readers know that when it comes to fishing there is nothing I like better than wandering up a mountain stream in search of a playful native brook trout. As luck would have it, in the latest episode of “Fly Fishing Untangled” from Mossy Creek Fly Fishing, Brian takes us along as he shows how he fishes a section of just such a mountain stream.
Last Sunday I had a chance to fish a similar section of a local mountain stream. Not surprisingly, Brian and I fish in very similar ways and have similar results…
Here are a couple of key points Brian makes:
When you come to some really good looking water, don’t go charging into it. You will spook fish and be disappointed. Fish the close water first
Fish the cushion. It’s often overlooked water
Don’t get all wigged out about what you are wearing. Sure, a neon shirt is not the best choice but, as Brian says, if the fish can tell you the color of your shirt you’re busted and need to back off.
The Mossy Creek Fly Fishing crew is putting out great stuff with their Untangled series. Be sure to sign up for their newsletter and follow their YouTube channel to get all this good stuff directly.
Not unlike the U.S. Senate apparently…
Some very good points called out in your post, looking forward to watching the Mossy Creek video.
P.S. hope your bracket isn't already busted. (Not unlike the U.S. Senate apparently)
As a kid we used to fly fish in the High Sierras (California) mountain streams, pools and rivers. Low growth trees and shrubs would line the sides of the rivers and we’d crouch there in the shadows
and carefully cast out.
I remember looking down into deep pools and seeing the biggest trout just lazing away there. They were far too wise to go for our hand tied flies.
But we caught plenty in the shadows and had great fish dinners!
This video reminded me of those great times!
Thanks!
