3x is a bit of insurance in case I snag a log, rock or some such. I use fluro because it sinks and is more stealthy, then tie a loop knot so the streamer moves freely.
I have never used a 3 x leader for trout but you are the second trusted fisherman who has talked about this in the last two weeks. I am convinced now and thank you.
I use a 5x even early in the season here in Nova Scotia but a 3x would probably work and be tougher for sure. I often fish size 10 Muddler Minnows.
If I had to fish one pattern all season, it would be a Muddler.
I need to put a few Muddlers in my box. Been a while since I fished them. I'm a big fan of the golden retriever, a local favorite.

It's a situational call. With dries I go 4 or 5x. But with streamers something a little more rugged can be useful.
