I love the concept that the river reaches and the fish grade. I usually tell folks who are starting their journey that each and every time I go out, I go out with a goal to work on one specific skill. That could be mending, softer presentations, depth, patience, observation..etc. As I am focusing on the one skill I will often catch fish. This takes the experience from being results oriented to process oriented which in my opinion is a healthier mindset.

I don't always focusing on one skill when I go. but If I notice one skill could use some work I'll try and spend more time doing that. The other day I felt my roll-cast needed some improvement so when I came to a piece of water where I could really work on it, I gave it some attention.

Good tips. It can be hard to pick up a new skill.
