When I break out the Tenkara rod, most times it’s fishing the Shenandoah Valley’s myriad mountain brook trout streams. Most of those fish come easily to hand for a quick release.
Fishing the spring creeks here in the Valley is a different story. The local spring creek browns and rainbows are much bigger than our local brookies. Landing big fish with a tenkara rod, because it is so long and flexible, can take some practice.
The best explanation and demonstration of how to land big fish comes from Rob Worthing. Worhting is a long-time tenkara guide with hours and miles under his belt with a tenkara rod in hand. His knowledge of casting mechanics and dynamics is exceptional. When he shows you how to do something, it’s always worth listening to.
Here he explains and demonstrates what he calls, “riding the power curve.”
Give Rob’s technique a try next time you hook into a big fish and see how it works for you.
As a wise man once said: A good day fishing is lived twice…
Tom, I can vouch for the challenge of playing and landing a big trout on a spring creek. Supremely glad you were there to help.
