Around 1976, Edward Abbey speaking to environmentalists in Missoula, Montana, gave some solid advice:
“One final paragraph of advice: do not burn yourselves out. Be as I am - a reluctant enthusiast...a part-time crusader, a half-hearted fanatic. Save the other half of yourselves and your lives for pleasure and adventure. It is not enough to fight for the land; it is even more important to enjoy it. While you can. While it’s still here.”
The assaults on our public lands can be disheartening, and keeping up the fight can be wearing. Abbey got it right, be sure to make time to enjoy what you are fighting for. It’s a habit that will renew your sense of purpose and invigorate you to continue the fight.
A recent trip to one of my favorite mountain streams did just that. Adventure and pleasure, just the solace I needed.

good advice! yesterday the sounds of engines and traffic in town were clearly getting to me, so i drove a few miles out of town to scout three creeks for
potential brookie fishing. the change in my psyche was noticeable as i noticed a couple of rises, heard bird calls, and enjoyed seeing spring wildflowers walking in green forest. the mosquitos were even tolerable! abbey (and you) are wise…thanks
