There is a special place in hell for flies that have wraps or head cement in the hook eye, especially in small flies like sizes 16, 18, 20. Anything that makes the tiny hole less accessible is a real pain. Add in low light and aging eyesight and it’s a nightmare.
A couple of weeks ago, my fellow guide, Sam Skidmore, was watching me struggle with tying on a fly and shared this tip.
When you’re tying on a fly, cut the end of the tippet at 45-60 degree angle. That creates a finer point and smaller, sharper edge to the tippet end, making it easier to thread the end thru the hook eye.
I was amazed at how well it worked, and greatly appreciated Sam’s suggestion. It’s now a habit whenever I cut tippet.
I’ve recently been tying on hooks with oversized eyes ( EzEyeFly).
Doesn’t remedy the sloppy application of head cement , but definitely easier on my aging eyes.
Well, dang! That's so simple and so logical, I don't know why I never thought of something like that. Thanks for the tip, Tom.
